Buying Property in North Cyprus

Many irish citizens have purchased properties in the Government controlled area of the Republic of Cyprus. However, Irish citizens considering the purchase of
property in the northern part of Cyprus, which is not under the effective control of the Government of the Republic of Cyprus, are strongly advised to seek qualified independent
legal advice due to potential claims related to title and
ownership from Cypriots displaced from that area in 1974,
which may lead to serious financial and legal repercussions.

Potential buyers may face legal proceedings in the courts of the Republic of Cyprus, decisions of which can be executed elsewhere in the EU, including Ireland.

Furthermore, there is a Cypriot law making it a criminal offence, with penalties of up to 7 years imprisonment, to purchase, sell, rent, promote or advertise the sale of property in Northern Cyprus owned by Greek Cypriots. Any attempt to undertake such a transaction is also a criminal offence under Cypriot law.

Northern Cyprus is still occupied
by Turkish Military Forces.

Northern Cyprus, what you need to know before you consider buying property.

In 1974 Cyprus was invaded by Turkey. The invasion came after more than a decade of sporadic violence between the island's Greek and Turkish Cypriots. Resulting from the constitutional breakdown of 1963.

During the turkish invasion, around 200.000 Greek Cypriots were aggressively displaced from their homes in the north by the Turkish military. The greek cypriot refugees had to flee from their homes. Their only choice was to run to the south.

To this day 37% of the north is occupied by Turkish Armed forces.

In 1983 Turkish Cypriots declared the north independent. Now known as the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, or TRNC, which is recognised only by Turkey. See the map here...

No Freedom for Greek Cypriots to Reclaim Property

The displaced Greek Cypriots have never been given the freedom to reclaim their land or properties in the North.

To this day Greek Cypriots still hold ownership of property and land in the Turkish occupied area of Cyprus.

They own 78% of the land in the North. Turkish Cypriots own 21%.

NO PERSON, DEVELOPER OR AGENT HAS THE LEGAL RIGHT TO TRANSFER PROPERTY OR LAND OWNERSHIP THROUGH OCCUPATION, RESALE OR DEVELOPEMENT OF THESE PROPERTIES OR LAND. THAT IS FACT!!
